Experience one of Costa Rica's most extraordinary wildlife encounters at the Ostional Wildlife Refuge in Guanacaste, home to the famous olive ridley sea turtles and the spectacular natural phenomenon known as the arribada.

Turtle Nesting Experience

This special wildlife experience is offered approximately once a month, during the period following the full moon, when sea turtle activity is typically at its highest. Since this is a natural phenomenon, exact dates may vary depending on turtle activity and local environmental conditions.

Your adventure begins with a convenient afternoon departure, with pickup between 1:30 PM and 2:00 PM, allowing you to arrive in Ostional in time for the guided turtle experience, which generally begins around 5:00 PM.

With the assistance of authorized local guides, you will have the opportunity to observe olive ridley sea turtles coming ashore to nest along the beach. Depending on the level of activity, you may witness turtles digging their nests, laying their eggs, and returning to the ocean, while learning about their life cycle and the importance of protecting their nesting grounds.

Take unforgettable photographs and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere of Costa Rica's Pacific coastline as these incredible animals begin their ancient nesting ritual. The experience concludes with a return departure between approximately 6:00 PM and 7:00 PM.

Please note that turtle nesting and hatchling activities are natural events and cannot be guaranteed. Wildlife activity depends on factors such as turtle behavior, weather, tides, moon phases, beach conditions, and other environmental factors.

The famous arribada, when large numbers of olive ridley turtles arrive at the beach to nest, occurs during specific periods throughout the year. Although turtle activity is generally associated with the days following the full moon, the exact timing, duration, and intensity of each arribada vary naturally.

The turtle experience is offered approximately once a month, following the full moon, and is subject to turtle activity and local regulations. Availability and exact dates should therefore be confirmed in advance.

Access to the nesting beach is regulated to protect the turtles and their habitat. Visitors must follow the instructions of authorized local guides. Photography restrictions may apply, including limitations on flash photography and the use of artificial lights.
